White Walls Wednesday - Customizing with Cricut and Washi Tape

White Walls Wednesday is baaaaacck - and today I'm sharing a project that I've been thinking about for YEARS but kept putting off until I got a great little tip about applying intricate vinyl using washi tape. Yep! Washi tape!

So many military families have a wall hanging similar to this one - a record of all the places you've lived with new duty stations lovingly added along the way. I get mine from WordBoards on Etsy - I love to support other military wives in their small businesses!

The only issue? Unless you wait to buy your boards until after you've left a location you don't have the dates on them! This one hangs prominently in our kitchen and every time we have a new friend over we get the "when did you live in Hawaii?" or "how long did you live in Georgia?" questions - and truth be told, my memory is too terrible to remember! With my Cricut Explore Air, some gold vinyl that washi tape idea I was able to customize my sign in about 30 minutes. I'm just sorry I waited so long!

Ha! I didn't notice until I had this post all ready to go that Bizzy Bee is poking her head around the corner in the photo below. That sweet girl is like Where's Waldo! :)

SUPPLIES:
Cricut Explore Air and Design Space
Cricut Standard Grip cutting mat
Cricut Tools Craft Basic Set
Cricut Vinyl (I used Gold)
light colored washi tape
scissors

Measure the space you've got on your project where you want to put your dates, then select a font in Design Space and type out the dates, sizing to fit. TIP: use a "plain" font, because these are SO small that you will spend a hundred years weeding them if you try to pick something fancy. TRUST me. ;)

Cut the dates from the vinyl, then use the weeder from the tool kit to weed the excess vinyl from the backing so only the dates remain. Instead of applying transfer tape to the dates - apply washi tape! It is smaller, easier to use, and semi-sheer so you can still see your images to set them in place. WASHI TAPE! Who woulda thought?

Once the washi tape has been applied, cut the dates in to individual sections.

Use the scraper from the tool kit to apply your dates to your project.

And voila! Working on this project brought back so many memories of beautiful places, houses that felt like home, and the incredible people we've met along the way. Luckiest, luckiest, luckiest girl in the world.

I have pretty often said I need to borrow small children so I can make cute craft projects and throw fun parties...but instead I am just going to move next door to Melissa of Fawn Over Baby! Melissa is the genius behind Fawn Over Baby - a website full of home decor, party and DIY ideas for moms and their little ones. Hi! I am Melissa, wife to my loving and supportive husband Ryan & mom to our two precious kiddos, McKenzie & Haines. During nap time, I blog over at Fawn Over Baby (www.fawnoverbaby.com) sharing inspirational ideas on everything baby and child related (with a few DIY tutorials). My husband and I also opened up shop on Etsy (www.etsy.com/shop/fawnoverbaby) offering hand-crafted natural wood baby/child toys that are non-toxic safe and designed to provide a charming accent piece to any space as well as endless amounts of play for baby without being overwhelming. White Walls Wednesday - Elaine Kooienga of InkLane Design

Prepare yourselves. You know all of those people on your Christmas list that are IMPOSSIBLE to buy for? Your parents who don't really want any gifts? Your best friend who has everything? The co-worker you drew for Secret Santa?  Heck...anyone you need to buy for that you really want to WOW with something personal and meaningful?  My friends - I give you Elaine Kooienga of InkLane Design - the latest installment in my White Walls Wednesday series!

Hello, I’m Elaine! I’m a designer, illustrator, Marine [vet] wife, lover of all things creative, and master multi-tasker.
InkLane Design started out as a little something to do in the evenings after my full time graphic design job, but really took off once I began illustrating custom family portraits. My first one was a gift for my brother and sister in law, and on a whim I listed it in the shop. I am so humbled with the response I’ve gotten from these quirky little illustrations! I have so much fun working on them and love putting together all the details that make each one unique.
I have way more ideas than hours in a day, but my goal is to offer stationery, wedding invitations, and lots more wall decor in the near future. :)

One look at these fun and fabulous prints from Elaine and your mind will start racing with all of the gift giving possibilities. She will customize a family portrait down to the tiniest detail!  Mom and Army Dad with three kids? Yes! Single Mom with two kids and a cat? Yes! Couple with two giant great danes (coughcoughKingstonscoughcough)? Yes! Newlyweds? Yes! How much would ANYONE on your Christmas list love to receive this?

Remember that best friend who has everything?

And those grandparents/parents who don't want anything and are impossible to buy for?

Know someone who bought a new house this year? How much would your folks love a print of the house where they raised their family?

Elaine also has downloadable prints (starting at 5.99! how great is that!) that would be perfect for any occasion. How about that college student who has moved away from home? Or your co-worker who was born and raised in the same place?

Elaine has so many gorgeous choices...the "Home is Where" print would be a perfect housewarming gift for your new neighbors. How about downloading that "Give Thanks" print and putting it in a frame to give as a hostess gift this Thanksgiving? Or select one of the bible verses available for the women in your Bible Study group!

Know someone having a baby?  How about some nursery wall art?  Ready to print or customizable?

nurseryprint.jpg

See what I mean?  SO MANY AMAZING CHOICES! I am thrilled to share Elaine's talent with you - although now that means I better hurry up and get my orders in before you do! :) Elaine's artwork is available on Etsy and the White Walls Marketplace - which supports military family small businesses. You can also head over to her Facebook Page for even MORE inspiration! If your Christmas list just got a LOT easier...you're welcome.  :)

White Walls Wednesday - Ashleigh Nicole Events

It's White Walls Wednesday and if there was ever a day I wanted to be a five year old boy - this would be it! When I came across Marine wife Ashleigh Goodwin of Ashleigh Nicole Events I IMMEDIATELY wanted to have a kids party and fly Ashleigh in from California!

Hi! I’m Ashleigh! Since I was a little girl, I’ve loved all things beautiful! I thrive by being creative and thinking outside the box. I remember being so excited to get school projects just so I could show off my creative skills (yes, I was that kid)!

I started planning events for my sons’ birthdays and my love for planning blossomed from there. I believe that the little details make the most memorable events. I put my whole heart into every event that I plan and it is my true passion.

I am inspired most by my 3 little boys! Their wild imagination keeps me on my toes and they make me appreciate life for its simple beauties. I styled and designed this Dinosaur party for my older two little boys, Carter and Braxton! They absolutely love dinosaurs so I went to work planning a rustic dinosaur party!
— Ashleigh Goodwin

Ashleigh threw quite possibly the coolest dinosaur excavation party for her sons - and every detail was created with love. From the fun invitations to the food prep to the party favors and more - this is a birthday the boys (and their guests) will never forget!

One of the many things I love about Ashleigh is in addition to being INCREDIBLY creative - she is a sharer! On her blog post about the party she tells us HOW she created the DIY projects, WHERE she found things like the custom cookies and the party banner (and includes links!) - so not only does she inspire you, she just makes it incredibly easy for you to recreate the projects for your own party. She makes it seem do-able...and that is so rare and SO appreciated!

This party was the epitome of hands on! From the handmade dinosaur shaped crayons and activity book party favors to the make your own trail mix bar (which is GENIUS!!!!!!) - Ashleigh even hosted some real life reptiles to make the day complete!

dino6.jpg

I could go on and on and on and on about all the cool details of this party - trust me when I say you NEED to go over to Ashleigh's blog to check it out for yourself. I am so inspired by her creativity, so excited to have found her, and can't wait to see what she creates next! Thanks Ashleigh!

Thanks so much to all of these incredible women for letting me share their creations! Interested in learning more about White Walls? If you're a service member or card-carrying spouse, join them (and me!) on their Facebook group! Not a service member or spouse? That's okay -  they've got a website where you can pin from the Gallery, read the blog or some great tutorials, or support military family small businesses by shopping the White Walls Marketplace. There are tons of ways to share, shop, and support military families and I hope you will join us!

White Walls Wednesday - Fall Wreaths

One of my favorite things about Fall is watching people transform their houses. Whether it is a wreath on the door, a re-do of their mantle or a complete decor overhaul, Fall seems to bring out the decorator in all of us!  The White Walls Facebook Page has been abuzz with handmade Fall wreaths so instead of featuring one White Waller today I'm celebrating the season by featuring nine creative women! :)

I love the combination of the rustic wood, the metallic letter and the gorgeous fall colors from Andrea Moore.

God has blessed me with a loving husband for 7 years and counting, and three beautiful boys: Avery (4), Gavin (2), and Isaac (1). When I’m not cleaning and making peanut butter sandwiches I am drinking coffee, crafting, and photographing.
— Andrea Moore

Devan Haag Chmelar's gorgeous and classic wreath would be a stunning addition to any front door!

I love coffee, my pups and living in the South (when the Marine Corps lets us, that is!)
— Devan Haag Chmelar

The fun curly-ques on this wreath from Christine Palmer make me ridiculously happy.

This wreath from Amber Davis could easily be changed for every season...and who doesn't love burlap? Amber is an Army wife of seven years and the busy mom of a 5 and 3 year old!

A square wreath!!  Yes!! I love everything about this - from the unique shape to the succulents in the corner - this needs to get on my door. Thanks Cassie Hoyt!

Im a married to a wonderful man with two beautiful babies! My first love is photography and home decorating! I also enjoy refurbishing furniture and bargain shopping (thrift stores/flea markets) and anything crafty!! I love to get my kids involved too! We are recently retired with the air force and are enjoying being home in texas!
— Cassie Hoyt

My friend Erin Morris is one of the founders of White Walls - and this season she created this BEAUTIFUL wreath made out of a chalkboard! A chalkboard!

I’m Erin, Oregonian transplanted in Vegas. I’m obsessed with DIY projects and making old furniture new again.
— Erin Morris

A darling little fall fox? Could this be any cuter? Love this wreath from Lydia Putman!

I am an army wife who has been married to the love of my life for 10.5 years. We have 4 beautiful children and I love to craft. I make hair bows, wreaths, and redo furniture!
— Lydia Putman

We can't forget about creating Halloween wreaths - and this one from Tori Rhodes perfectly combines Fall colors and Halloween fun!

Lisa Platt loves her side business creating tulle and paper wreaths - and this super spooky Halloween wreath is a fabulous example!

Leticia Johnson is Active Duty Air Force (for 24 years). A wife and mother of 2 daughters, 20 and 14. She is currently stationed in Colorado - and she created this black and gold wreath as a classic Halloween home decor piece!

I am OBSESSED with this wreath from Eron Wuthering - a square spiderweb? Made from a frame?  Come on.

I am a quiet person with a very loud mind. Various arts have always been my passion and a big part of my life. I very much enjoy creating, designing and photography.
— Eron Wuthering

White Walls Wednesday - Dana Albalate

Hip&Humblecollage

I have always been interested in renovating/upcycling furniture...but with this move especially I found myself really wanting to be more mindful of reusing things we already own and reutilizing our old furniture.  So when I "met" Dana Albalate on White Walls I knew I had found a kindred spirit! Dana is the fourth installment of my White Walls series - and I was drawn to her because of her super cool take on upcycling furniture. I LOVE her color/finish choices!

It was only after I contacted Dana about being on the blog that I found out the real story...Dana is Active Duty Air Force and a mother of four! And is still cranking out beautiful pieces like this! The next time I tell myself I am too busy or just don't know where I'll find the time I will think of Dana and be inspired.

Dana has started a Facebook Page - Hip & Humble - where you can follow along on her adventures and check out some of the fabulous pieces she creates.  So say hello to Dana - I can't wait to see where this road takes her!

I am an Active Duty Air Force Officer/ Labor and Delivery Nurse, full time college student, wife, and mom of four. I have been up cycling for over 20 years. I became a single mom at a very young age and I quickly learned how to refurb furniture. I love taking ugly cast-offs and giving them new life. Refurb is my passion and I hope to, someday, have my own store.

White Walls Wednesday - Kristin Bigouette

Back in the day, the only thing that stopped me from peeking in to the windows of neighbors' houses was the fear of getting arrested. ;) I have ALWAYS been in love with how other people decorate their homes (I am THAT guest at parties hinting around at getting a house tour), what they cherish and put on display, the stories behind their most treasured pieces, and seeing a glimpse in to their lives.

Now - thanks to the beauty of the interwebs (big shout out to Pinterest here) we are invited in to homes all around the world and can be inspired, touched, motivated and connected by photos and rooms and ideas that we share. And THAT is how I found Krstin Bigouette!

Kristin is the third installment of my new White Walls Series - and when I saw the photos of her living room online I immediately wanted to see what the rest of her house looked like because I loved her style!  Fortunately for us Kristin started a blog about a month ago - Willow Leaf Inspired - and gives us a glimpse in to her kitchen, office (I am CRAZY for how she displays her business name on the wall!), living room, and much more! One of the things I like best about Kristin's style is that she takes AFFORDABLE items (IKEA, WalMart, HomeGoods, etc) and adds her own touch to them. She created a look that is accessible to everyone!

Thanks so much for opening your home to us Kristin - can't wait to see what you create next!

Hi, I’m Kristin. Army wife, midwestern-er, hairstylist, lover of all things decor! I am currently residing in Maryland with my husband and loyal canine companion, Oscar. We have lived here for 8 years, which in Army time is basically forever. I have worked full time as a hairstylist for the past 10 years but spend any and all extra time trying to make our base housing feel like a home! For all the military wives out there, you know, the struggle is real.

My love for decorating started when we were first stationed in Maryland. Our wedding gift from my parents was to furnish our first home together…Willow Leaf Lane. I was amazed how much a little paint and a million trips to Home Goods could make! (Oh, did I tell you we have 3 Home Goods just in the immediate area?! SCORE!) After a few years in that house we decided to try living in base housing. 6 years later we’re still here! I dream about the day we have our “forever home” and I can do all the modifications I want! But until then, I will work with the white walls I was given!

White Walls Wednesday - Katherine Paige

Last Wednesday I launched the first of a new series - White Walls Wednesday. White Walls is a private online community for military spouses/service members where people can share ideas for decorating rentals/on post housing. I have been SO inspired by their creativity that every Wednesday I will be featuring a spouse or service member and sharing one of their favorite projects! This week we're saying hello to Katherine Paige - owner of Scarlet Morning (who - by the way - makes quite possibly the MOST precious little girl clothes evah)!

Hi, I’m Katherine! I am a children’s clothing designer, by trade, a USAF spouse and mother to a beautiful 2-year old girl, by destiny. I have been crafting and creating for as long as I can remember. (I sewed my first pillowcase in 1st grade!!) Making people happy is my motivation behind every piece that I make. I just love love love seeing smiling faces. When I am not working on my brand, scarlet morning, I am joyfully chasing around an endlessly energetic toddler! Conceptualizing her 2nd birthday was so much fun for me. Her love for all things “ocean” inspired me to create a really fun and adorable oceanic wonderland for her mermaid party “under the sea.” I hope you feel inspired to create something fun that makes someone happy, the next chance you get!

Katherine caught my eye with this PRECIOUS mermaid birthday party she created for her daughter.  From the decorations to the games to the food...Katherine thought of absolutely every detail! I mean...jellyfish made out of shower caps and twinkle lights!  YES!

activities:
- paper mermaid dolls
- sea urchin toss
- sunken treasure chest full of gold coins + jewelry
- pin the arms on the octopus (which doubled as an arrange the sea scene game, since all of the felt animals were backed with velcro!)
- an A-W-E-S-O-M-E floor to ceiling "jellyfish cove" made with a refrigerator box + brown paper.

favors:
- personalized, different colored organza mermaid tails
- pearl bracelets
- chocolate "coral" pieces & white chocolate seashells

food:
- ombre naked cakes topped with gelatin bubbles
- "sea snails" -- pigs in a blanket
- "jellyfish sandwiches" -- pbj cut out as stars and number "2"s
- "sea stones" -- sausage meatballs
- "brain coral" -- baked mac 'n cheese in mini muffin tins
- "driftwood" -- pretzel rods
- "shark teeth" -- cheese triangles
- "kelp" -- green grape skewers
- "crab legs" -- carrot sticks
- "octopus arms" -- red pepper slices
- "sea cucumbers" -- pickles

White Walls Wednesday - Rachel McGee

Those of you who have known me for a while know that out of all the "labels" I have for myself...daughter, crafter, friend, giant dog owner, etc - military wife is almost always at the top of my list.  I am so proud to be a part of an incredible sisterhood (and brotherhood) of military spouses, and one of my MOST favorite things about moving has always been meeting new military spouse friends who love being creative as much as I do.

Then I found White Walls.

White Walls is an online community dedicated to helping military families make home wherever Uncle Sam sends them. What started as two friends creating a private Facebook group for military members and spouses to share their ideas on how to decorate rentals or on-post housing has blossomed in to a hub of creativity and a celebration of making a house a home.  And I have been inspired!

So with their permission (thanks Erin and Megan!) I have decided to share some of this White Walls inspiration with you! Every Wednesday I will be introducing you to a military spouse and sharing his/her creativity and a little bit about them.  Some have blogs, some have a small business, some just do it for fun, some would tell you they aren't really creative - but they are all amazing and I can't wait for you to meet them.

My first victim/guinea pig/military spouse is Rachel McGee.  I'd been rolling this idea around in my head for a while but when I saw the photo of the wall Rachel HAND PAINTED (uhhh...yeah) for her daughter's nursery it kicked my butt in to gear because I wanted the world to see it! I am just crazy about this entire room - the colors, the attention to the tiniest detail, the obvious love that went in to creating it - beautiful. For more information about the materials she used you can head on over to her blog - and she also has her own Facebook page! So people - meet Rachel!

I am Rachel McGee, creator, designer, lover of all things beautiful and artistic! My love for design began in High school. While most of my friends spent their days watching MTV, I lived for HGTV’s Trading Spaces and Genevieve Gorder was my idol. I wasn’t able to go to school for design as I married a US Airman at just 20 years old. I left home to follow him around the world and my career took a back burner. Despite having no formal training over the last 9 years I have designed and created a multitude of goodies, rooms, and events for friends, family, clients, and myself. I just can’t stop my passion for it! I believe there are two kinds of designers in this world, ones who are ‘taught” and ones who are just born that way. So now after settling in the Denver, Colorado area with our family of 5 I stay home to take care of my little ones, blog about all of the creative fun I have, and attempt to share my passion with the world! I hope you love my work!
